Got the skills but need the qualifications?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), also commonly referred to as Skills Assessment, offers you a simple and cost effective way to gain recognition for all the work related skills and knowledge that you have achieved.
What is Recognition of Prior Learning?
Recognition of Prior Learning allows you to receive recognition and course credit for the knowledge and skills that you already posses, no matter how and where you attained them. This can include:
- Previous Study
- Work Experience
- Life Experience
- Leisure Pursuits
- Volunteer Work
You can achieve a number of benefits through Recognition of Prior Learning such as:
- You might spend less time studying
- It might cost less to gain qualifications
- You might not have to waste time learning things you already know
Careers Australia has built its reputation on providing superior assessment and training solutions around the country and our dedicated staff are ready to help you through this process.
How does Recognition of Prior Learning take place?
To make things as easy as possible for you, we have outlined the Recognition of Prior Learning process in a series of seven simple steps:
- Contact us to obtain an Application Pack.
- Complete and return your application including any evidence you think is appropriate.
- Pay any fees if applicable.
- An assessor will contact you to discuss the best ways to gather the required evidence.
- The assessor will organise for you to undertake necessary gap training.
- The assessor will determine your competency in the selected units.
- If you are found to be competent in the necessary units then you will be issued with a formal qualification from Careers Australia.
If you disagree with the assessor's decision, please contact us and we will arrange for an independent review and re-assessment.

“I wanted to have a career change; I liked the class schedule, which is 2 ½ days a week. That meant I could spend time with my family and have a job for the rest of the week. I also like the environment for learning, being that it was an easier transition from being a mother to an adult student.”
“The Diploma of Business helped me gain the knowledge I needed to achieve my personal best and to be successful. I gained acceptance into the University of my choice thanks to Careers Australia.”
